Cranberry Citrus Compote
  • 2 medium oranges

  • 3/4 cup fresh or frozen cranberries

  • 1/3 cup packed brown sugar

  • 1/4 cup water

  • 1/4 cup orange juice

  • 1 whole star anise

  • 1 large red grapefruit

  1. Remove a 2-inch strip of peel from one of the oranges; set oranges aside. 2. In a small saucepan, combine the orange peel, cranberries, brown sugar, water, orange juice, and the star anise. Bring to a boil.

  2. Reduce heat to simmer, uncovered, for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  3. Discard orange peel and anise.

  4. Transfer cranberry mixture to a medium bowl. Cool slightly.

  5. Peel, seed, and section the oranges and the grapefruit over a small bowl to catch juices.

  6. Stir orange and grapefruit sections and juices into the cranberry mixture.

  7. Serve compote warm or chilled.
