2 medium oranges
3/4 cup fresh or frozen cranberries
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup orange juice
1 whole star anise
1 large red grapefruit
Remove a 2-inch strip of peel from one of the oranges; set oranges aside. 2. In a small saucepan, combine the orange peel, cranberries, brown sugar, water, orange juice, and the star anise. Bring to a boil.
Reduce heat to simmer, uncovered, for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Discard orange peel and anise.
Transfer cranberry mixture to a medium bowl. Cool slightly.
Peel, seed, and section the oranges and the grapefruit over a small bowl to catch juices.
Stir orange and grapefruit sections and juices into the cranberry mixture.
Serve compote warm or chilled.
