I have a concern about trying to get on disability since my by-pass surgery.
I read the other article about disability and after reading most of that article, it sounds like I should have tried getting on disability after that surgery. I have applied before for disability and was denied basically my doctor telling them I can still work 40 hours a week. But after reading some of the discussion from a 4 year ago discussion, I would have to be not working for several months, well how can I pay my bills with no income and how do I convince my doctor I can't work 40 hours a week any more. My legs do a lot of cramping and they feel like they swell after being on my feet for several hours, not to mention I do get tightness in my chest when I have to do quite a bit in the store. I'm looking for advice now. I can't afford all my meds because of insurance not covering it

Hi harleyrider,

Nice to meet you. And that's a good question, one that I often talk to my clients about.

Here is a link to an article about disability that I wrote awhile back:

http://www.heartconnect.com/heart-condition-discussions/general/33109-chronic-communication-at-work-is-it-time-for-temporary-disability#SbTc6R7pTDEpdSkr.97

This might be a topic to yet again bring up with your doctor. It might help to keep a journal for awhile on how you are feeling, the bad days and how this impacts your work. You might also consider getting a second opinion.

You might also check into what accommodations your workplace might be able to offer. Your doctor would most likely need to be involved in this as well. Your HR department might be able to discuss accommodations with you.

Just a couple of ideas. I hope you will keep advocating for yourself. And keep in touch with us. Let us know how you're doing.

Gary

Hello Dr. Gary,
Well my workplace is a fast food restaurant and I'm one of the managers there so there really isn't no accommodating to that field unless I demote down then I take a lost in pay that I can't afford. The lady in our HR department seems to have a thing against me because of 2 injuries I suffered at 2 different locations almost a year apart. The last injury my store manager had to have an employee write out a witness statement to prove I did what I did to cause my injury. And I've been told by my old cardiologist that my place and line of work is too stressful for my condition. I have tried applying for other jobs and get told I'm either over qualified or they are looking for a more suitable candidate then myself. And thank you for the ideas of keeping a journal to keep on my good and bad days I will definitely start doing that. And now that I'm back connected to Heart Connect I will keep in touch with everyone

Hey harleyrider, thanks a lot for replying and letting me know what's going on with you. I see your point, not a lot of options for accommodations. I am so sorry to hear about what's happened at your job, how you have been treated. Really sorry. I can only guess at how stressful the fast food environment must be, and working in an unsupportive company must make it that much harder. I hope you will have some better news in the job department soon. Keep taking good care of yourself, and advocating for yourself, and doing what you can to have a better job situation. I am so glad you are part of this community. Let's make sure we keep the connection going. I am always around! And keeping you in my thoughts! Gary

Hello again Dr. Gary,
Well I have an update about my job in the fast food industry, thanks to my boyfriend I will be working at the same place as him doing some less stressful jobs, packing elbows to downspouts of the gutters to homes. And it will be set hours not something that jumps around and messes with my sleep. And better pay as well as benefits and vacation and over time if need be. And I will also have another person working next to me this company is all about safety. I'm getting anxious to start there

Hello Dr. Gary,
Another update with the new job. Well I have come to a small snag with the new job, they have put me on another job often that causes my heart to race and beat faster than normal and now I need to get restrictions from my doctor in order to stay off that. It involves using an impact staple gun which is the culprit that causes my heart to race. I was wondering to if this could be my sign to try to get on disability since my by-pass surgery. I really don't know what to do anymore
