The Memorial Day holiday is upon us and it’s a great occasion for us to reflect on our fallen heroes. As any holiday, parties loaded with calorie dense munchies, burgers, hotdogs, pizzas, booze and desserts have become the norm.
There is no way I am skipping any pool party and neither should you. Having said that, such parties can be occasions for many of us to overindulge for days on end leading to weight gain, worsening of diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol.
Here are five simple tips that can get you the best of both worlds which is to enjoy the food in those parties without overdoing it. Balance and moderation are the key approaches to the choices you’ll be making this weekend. Here are the five tips that anyone can apply regardless of the chronic disease you have:
Tip # 1: Keep a daily meal structure of 3 main meals and 2 fruit snacks and make sure not to skip meals. People commonly tend to skip the meal before the dinner party meal and that’s only going to make you hungrier and overeat mainly food that’s high in fat, sugar and salt.
Tip # 2: At the party start with the vegetables munchies such as broccoli, carrots, celery combined with a touch of your favorite dip for flavor. You can also start with a vegetable salad but go easy on cheese, croutons, bacon and dressing portions. After you fill up with vegetables then you can munch on potato chips and pretzels. Vegetables are full of nutrients and especially fiber which will fill you up when combine it with water.
Tip # 3: Keep up with water to about 6 to 7 cups per day especially the day of the party for many reasons. Water is health and life without it we can’t survive. But there are a couple more reasons why adequate water supply during party is crucial. The first thing you want to do when you get to a party is drink a full cup of water. First off this cup of water will fill your stomach up and get you to eat less especially when combined with fiber rich food. The second reason is that water quenches your thirst and you will consume less alcohol.
Tip # 4: Take a moderate approach to alcohol consumption and limit your consumption to 1 or 2 drinks per day. One drink is the equivalent of one 12 oz beer, 5 ounces of wine and one and half ounce of hard liquor or spirits. Studies are clear about the dangers of alcohol beyond 2 drinks a day. Holiday days are no different than regular days and should be no excuse to drink 12 to 15 beers every weekend day like some people do.
Tip # 5: Finally when you’re ready for the grill, a hotdog or a lean burger are good choices. Go easy on fatty condiments such as bacon and cheese. Go easy on fries or fried food and if you do consume them then cut back on the bread portions of the buns and on fatty munchies.
