Every month need to go and have it checked and I was doing fine. I have been eating more salads over the course of the last few months. All of a sudden my coumadin level started to go haywire. It was dropping and it went as low as 1.7. I figured the only thing different was the large amount of salads and none of the vegetables should have sent me all over the board. My range is 2.5 to 3.5, One time after4 years of being on it, I registered a 3.0. Finally perfect. Happy , happy, joy, joy. Well since while I was consuming the salads my level dipped I figured stop the salads. They were checking me every 2 weeks to make sure I was okay. So I stopped them and then the level went up to 5.1 and 2 weeks later 5.7. What the "He double hockey sticks was going on. At the last visit 2 weeks ago, I was at 1.9. I figured I had stopped the vegies completely, so I increased consumption, adding a spinach pizza, boost which is high in vitamin K, ate gingerbread cookies, but apparently I did a little too much. I scared the gal that does my test and she asked how I thought I would do and I wouldn't tell her what I did but from the conversation figured out by my stopping all the vitamin K not to eats, I had to get the vitamin K back in me and that was what brought it from the previous 5.4 to 1.9. I have leveled off and hope to have a normal reading. Any one else any comments?

INR had been checked on Sunday, original ER visit, and then again on Thurs. when the CAT SCAN was done. I go today to have it checked again. I was at 3.4 on Thurs. and they adjusted my dosage for 2 days and hopefully today will be in my range of 2.5 to 3.5. Tomorrow I go see the cardiologist. The eye has cleared up, but I do want to talk to him about headaches possibly causing the broken blood vessel in my eye. I wake up during the night sometimes and I feel like I have a bad headache coming on, sometimes present when I get up, and then sometimes is gone before I walk out the door for work. I have been going to my fitness center, some for the socialization until I return to my normal workout, but was doing a slow speed on the treadmill when all of a sudden I felt a swarm of pain through my head like a headache coming on. He will probably send me to a neurologist, but will see. Have a great day.

tank,

Good job hanging in there. Going to the gym if only for socialization is a great strategy for slowly working your way back into things. Make certain you call your docs about the headaches and get a referral to that neurologist!

Yup, it was the same for me, a torn gastronimus muscle. It took about six weeks to heal and that was with intensive therapy.

It is my opinion that drugs like Pradaxa will eventually replace coumadin. Unfortunately it will remain expensive until its patent runs out or more similar drugs become FDA approved and provide competition. The other problem is that Pradaxa is so new there are no studies to prove its efficacy for indications that include mechanical valves. Write down this prediction, Pradaxa, or a similar drug, will replace coumadin. But, docs won't prescribe them until the studies are done to prove what they all suspect.

I had not seen your post HH until today. The mechanical valve is not Pradaxa compatible. My cooumadin miseries scare me more. One week ago Sunday I went for my workout and added some situps to my routine that day. I have done the situps before so not a problem, but I had been away from the gym for about a month, so the muscles felt those situps. On Wed, I attempted to do a situp and as I pulled myself up something popped and hurt really bad. I stopped and I had been hurting really bad and finally on Sat. I went to a walk in clinic and had it checked out. The dr attributed to yes a pulled muscle. Sat. nite I began to bruise lower abdominal area and knew the heart meds were at work. Sunday morning I woke up to blood in my eye. Oh shoot could they be related so up to the ER I went. I freak when my eyes are effected because I only have site in one eye. The ER doctor check both abdominal and my eye and said I had a hemotoma from the muscle pull and a hemorhage in the eye. Both doctors talked about doing a CAT Scan, but felt it was not warranted. As of today, Wed, the muscle pain has gone down throughout the groin area and the bruising is expanding. I have an apt with the cardiologist next Wed. but this is really frightening me. I have a call in for my GP and waiting for him to call. I will keep you posted.

Yeah, sounds like a bleeding incident. I had one in my leg and the whole bottom of my foot looked like a giant bruise as the blood eventually travelled there.

Surely the did an INR and/or pro-time test. What were your numbers? More importantly, based on this latest episode, how is your doctor addressing your treatment? If you feel he/she is not being aggressive enough you might considert a second opinion!

tank,

Yeah that's the problem with coumadin. It is very sensitive to your personal halth environment and small dose changes. That is why testing is done so often. Once drugs like Pradaxa and its counterparts are further tested over time and go off patent they will be more widely used as doctors and insurance companies become more comfortable with them.

Had a CAT Scan done yesterday and it confirmed a muscle tear. About 1 1/2 inch long and about 1/2 inch wide. Will take up to 4 weeks to heal, but at least now I know what is going on with that. Coumadin back up to 3.4 which for me is good, but backing off the coumadin some so I don't go too high. Get that rechecked on Tuesday and see the cardiologist on Wed. I still want to see if they can determine why the eye problem. The one thing I failed to ask was could one have related to the other? I will find out I hope. Have a great day and a Happy Mother's day to all Mom's.

tank,

Missed this one. Yeah, as I alluded to earlier I had a nasty muscle tear in my calf. No fun! I was on crutches for weeks - but it does heal over time. I'm at 100% now.
