Good Morning;
Formost for me are my family and my health.
My father had severe heart disease, being his first quardruple bypass was at 40. He had two more pluss a couple of triples. My mother had stints and my younger brother died at 32 due to a massive coronary. my other three brothers have all had heart attacks and I was told I had Coronary Artery Disease. "Knock on Wood" so far no heart attacks. I changed my lifestyle after my brother passed away but still have some chest pains and they found calcifications in my arteries. I have edema in both my lower legs and feet and take Lasix for this. No high blood pressure or cholesterol, but the thought is in the back of my moind that I might seeing as I have Hashimoto's and it could cause faulse readings. Things could be alot worse I guess.

Hi Lady Trolley,

It looks like you have extensive family history of heart disease. I suggest you have regular heart checkups with your doctor and periodic blood workups to keep a close eye on cholesterol levels even if you’re ok now. Also, make sure you keep your blood pressure in check.

If any of those parameters are out of control then make sure you take the medications your doctor prescribes to rectify any of those conditions if any. Also, ask your doctor about starting an Aspirin regimen to keep your blood thin to help avoid any heart attacks.

You are to be commended on making favorable lifestyle choices because to you it’s a must and not an option. Keep your weight under control and stay physically fit by getting involved in aerobic activity such as cycling indoors and outdoors, using elliptical machines at the gym, brisk walking and swimming. Make sure you get clearance from your doctor on what you can and can’t do before embarking on such activity.

Also, make sure you make favorable food choices by raising your fiber intake, cutting back on animal fat such as bacon, butter, whole milk products and fatty cuts of meat. Increase your intake of fruit, vegetables and good sources of fat such as nuts, avocados, canola and olive oil.

Reduce sugar from beverages and other sources because sugar transfers to fat in your body and make sure you reduce portion sizes. One last thing never smoke and try to avoid second hand smoke.

If you follow these general recommendations and stay healthy throughout life then you can reduce your chances of having heart problems even if you have a strong genetic tendency. I hope this was helpful.

Hi Roses4me,

There is no right or wrong answer but Hearthawk said it best; without your health you can't take good care of your family. When people don't make balanced food and activity choices they can be slashing decades from their lifespan due tio preventable and manageable diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and cholesterol.

My personal opinion is that health comes first and nothing else trumps it's importance. If you've flown on a plane and before the plane takes off the flight attendant starts demonstrating the safety features. When it comes to the oxygen masks dropping due to low pressure who should you put the oxygen mask on first you or your child? They say that when oxygen drops in the cabine then the oxygen masks drop from the compartment above your head.

They also say that if you are accompanied by your child or if a child is seated next you then place your mask FIRST then place the mask on your child why? Well obviously if you suffocate then you can't help your child. The same goes here. You need to look out for yourself and your health and when you are well then you can take better care of your loved ones and that's the moral of this story. So take good care of your health. Take care.

Another good question! Your family is important but if you do not first take care of yourself how can you take care of your family. It is like the chicken and the egg. Which comes first, lol! This is an old question with no good answer!

Two most important factors: My God and my family — and providing for both of them. Most nagging question about my condition: Exactly how bad is it?

I have to admit that the most important factor in my life anymore is my wife and family. Everything else is some distance away. Having had a heart attack and 2 cardiac arrests about a year ago has changed everything. The touch of a warm loving hand, the smell and feel of a soft spring breeze, the sounds of birds in the back yard are all more important than work and how much money is in the bank. Everything has taken on a new significance.
I'm not sure I have any nagging questions. I have an ICD now and live with some fear of the therapy it can provide, but also fully aware that the therapy may very well save my life someday.
I am very thankful for so much in my life right now.
