Dear HH hope you had a Happy Birthday! Had first defib implanted 12/27. Had first appt with doc on 2/1. Very disappointed to find out leads didn't hold. Had to go in this past Fri. to have it redone and new leads. Stupid metronic lady who programmed the device says I have twiddler syndrome. Some people twirl their hair when they are nervous. She thinks I take and turn my device in my sleep. They said even the sutures were gone. The lead retracted and wrapped around the device she said it flipped. It made me so angry she said this she said if you do it in your sleep you would have no idea. I beg to differ. They tell me it happened the first week. I have been really sore the second time around. They went right through the first scar. They closed it with steri strips. I hope I have a nice scar like I did the first time. It burns and stings. I am upset that I have to go through this a second time. I am upset they could not tell sooner. He didn't see me till six weeks after the surgery. A lot could have happened in that time.

When the doc found it this past Wed I opted to have it turned down. They wanted to do surgery that night but I had eaten and can't when you have food in your stomach. My dad was on meds for torn rotator cuff and he took advil on top of it. He became a GI bleeder and bled out to the point he had a heart attack. He is in ICU at VA in Pgh they say he is too weak for open heart he would not survive the surgery. His kidney and liver are declining. He is on a ventillator it is only a matter of time. I thought things were improving last night because my sister said they had given him lasix and got a lot of water off him. I thought it would help. Then the hosp called and said after sh left him last night he had some kind of seizure. They were taking him for a cat scan today. Waiting to hear what came of that. They were looking for bleeding on the brain. I have not called yet to find out what they found. He just turned 76 on Jan 23rd. It is so sad. It is a matter of time. My mom passed on xmas eve 2008. Dad has a girl friend he lives with and she has tongue cancer. Every call I get is about something happening to someone. I pray for all of them. But just find it hard to deal lately.

Have you ever heard of this twiddler's sydrome. They say they see it most common in dementia patients who play with their defibs. They say the device flipped and the lead retracted and wrapped around the device like a spool of fishing line. I can't imagine if I played with it as sore as it is you would think something like that would make it sore or be sore after. It does not make sense to me nor do I know how to prevent it from happening again. A friend suggested putting a piece of cardboard on an old shirt where the device is. But if you are going to rub it you are going to rub it either way. I don't want to do anything that would hurt my odds if you know what I mean. Just really at odds right now and very sad about my dad and waiting for that call. If anyone else has gone through leads coming loose I would like to hear from you. Thanks! ~ Maja

tank,

Hey hey! I agree! As most of us know, gettin' old is tough. Of course, it beats the alternative, lol!
