I am having a pacemaker/defib implanted tomorrow. I have to be at the hospital at 9am for a 10am procedure. They will keep me overnight. Unless there are complications. I am keeping a positive thought. Letting it in god's hands. Wanted to wish you all Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year! I don't anticipate being on her for awhile. Till I get situated and find out what I can do and can't do. Unless I can log on to my tablet I just got still learning how to use it. I like it a lot because it is a lot lighter than my laptop. I don't have a lot of strength in my arms. Hopefully when this is over I will have more strength and energy. Happy New Year!

Hello Maja, any how I just want to say I pray all went well with your surgery, I dont really know much about a defib really but I do have way to much knowledge about pacemakers I have had one since the age of 12, now just turned 47 and have been 100% battery operated since I was 12 years old, I have no heart beat with out the pacemaker, and through the years I have several of them malfunction, but I am very intuned with my body and my heart so lucky I have been able to know when something is wrong. so hey its a cake walk, and your going to be just great, and It is scarey but just keep the faith and know that your mind has a lot to do with control of your physical body so stay strong stay as stress free as possible and be happy for every today you have thats all anyone can do. I have gone through 17 major open heart surgeries starting at the age of 2 years old and spreadiing through the years. Medically I actually have arguments with doctors that dont know me and they tell me I should be dead, due to the fact that my transpostion of the great vessels has never been repaired and they say its impossible to live like that. well ok if it is than heck sure dont know who is typing this right now, cuz I do not think a spirit can type. any how smile and GOD BLESS take care
your friend Michele

Thanks! I have a defibrillator which also has a pacemaker. Waiting to find out what the weird feeling in my neck is about. Called defib doc today he told me to take tylenol for the pain and then go to ER if too bad he would see me Mon. I am a bit upset with him. He is the same fool that won't help with my disabiity he has me really upset. I have 20% ejection and that 20% is not pumping correctly. I also have left branch bundle block. I talked to osteopath last night he says talk to my regular cardiologist but that appt is not till Feb. Talked to disability lady she says their decision is not all about his opinion. It is not like I want to sit and collect. I love to be active and work with people. I am great in customer service. I am glad you are in tune with your body and able to type me a note. Hope you have a good day! The pain in the left side of my neck has let up. I just don't understand the pain in the neck. I just want an answer and don't feel I need to go to the ER to get it. I called him early enough in the day I think he could have seen me. And not let me dangle over the weekend. Oh well.

Yea aint doctors just great, my cardioligist is always threating to fire me cuz I adjust my own medications WHICH PLEASE DO NOT DO, and I tell her what I want to take and I tell her when I want to see her. and have been known to check myself out of the hospital. my way of getting around the crap at emergency rooms , is this I just show up at my doctors office, and the best one is to call 911 and get a ambulance ride cuz than you are seen right than. Now for a pain in the neck, which side is it, and did you have a intervenous line, ( IV ) in that side of the neck for the surgery? cuz them hurt like a well you know, It takes a lot for me to let them come even close to putting one in my neck, I have even thrown a pitcher full of water on my surgeon before, I am a hard headed woman who knows my body and am not going to be over medicated or put through unnecessary crap, which I hate to say it does happen way to much in the medical profession. Sorry Doctors are text books, very few are people who live through what we do and really understand what it is we live with other than what they are taught. and over medicating heart patients is a huge issue. so you have to do your own research for your self and how you feel and what makes you feel right not just what the doctors say, and never be afraid to go against what a doctor may say to you or most of all always question WHY on every thing and what its for what side effects how it is going to effect other parts of you as a person besides your heart, etc … im sure you get what im saying to you anyhow the neck I think is probably due to an IV at the time of surgery. but yes you should get it checked out if it appears to not get better or you start getting irregular beats or breathing becomes harder, or you see brusing or swelling, just keep an eye on it and remember doctors are text book, and get paid to medicate and keep us all coming back.
have a great day Michele

No my IV was in my left hand. The pain is not real bad but is in the left side of my neck just above where this defib is implanted. The nurse at the pacemaker/defib clinic it could be because I am still getting use to it and it is healing and she feels it is the leads. Now why could the stupid doc not tell his girl to tell me this? Made perfect sense. I find out more answers through the clinic then I do through him and his office. I found out his girls are not nurses just secretaries and assistants. I am going to call the cardiologist and try to push my appt up. I am in the process of switching cardiologist too. The other group half went upmc and half went excella now I have to figure where my ins applies. My defib doc normally uses both hospitals but I had to go to Westmoreland instead of here at home. I am going to call Westmoreland Clinic on Mon to find out if I can do things here at home instead. Both hospitals are Excella. In the same outfit. The pain in my neck is just in the one spot. That is why the clinic nurse thinks it could be the lead. He did say that when he did the echo before my proceudre it was only to check for clots he thought my ejection was better but yet he proceeded to do the procedure. This defib is to shock me back should my heart stop they say. My pressures and arthmeias are fine and the pacer is for a back up if they should be abnormal. Can you tell when your pacer has to work when it kicks in? They say that when the defib has to work I will know it that it will feel like someone kicked you in the chest. Right now I just feel the pulling when I go to stand up. And I think it feels somewhat heavy. Not real heavy but I know something is there. I guess it takes time to get use to. I was just diagnosed with dilated cardio myopathy the last week of Aug 2011. So this is plenty new to my personal self. Now heart runs heavy on both sides of my family. This is the first I have dealt with it and I am diabetic too. I need to really loose weight I go 200-210. I am going outside it was 60 today here. I need to take a walk and stretch. Seems all I do is sleep. I can do what I want but have to listen to my body and so when I am tired then I need to lay down and sleep. I slept from 7-10am this morning. I just feel drained. Oh well…thanks for the note.

Hi just jumping in shower but quickly just wanted to say yes I can feel every one of my heart beats or lack of heart beats or irreguelar beats but I have no heart beat at all never my pacemaker is the only reason I am alive at least when it comes to my heart beating be back in a little while

So you can feel when your pacemaker kicks in to take over. But then I think I am understanding that your heart does not beat your pacemaker does the whole job and if it weren't for the pacemaker you would not be alive. Wow! And you have been at this since you have been 2? May I ask how old you are? Do you work? I was laid off this past June I was a secretary in an accounting office. Then the last week of Aug I was diagnosed with this dilated cardio myopathy and 20% of my heart pumping and that 20% not pumping correctly. They are saying idoschemic cardiomyopathy but what I have is what was written across my mother's death certificate in 2008 when we buried her at 75. I see myself in my mom with this and then I also have carpal tunnel in both hands I am doing physical therapy for it but it is not doing much good. They say I am too high risk for surgery due to my heart. My hands don't hurt they are just numb a lot. They say reptative motion like typing, crocheting, and knitting all of which I enjoy and are my hobbies are bad for it. I have a deviated septum and a dropped bladder and can't do the stupid surgery because I am too high risk. I am going to call and ask new cardiologist Mon too push my appt up. I don't want to wait till Feb to find out when and how much I can walk on my treadmill without this thing shocking me. I would love to go back to work I hate sitting. I need to be busy. But they say listen to my body and when I am tired then sleep. It is weird because when I am tired I have to do just that almost immediately it is hard to fight the tiredness. I don't like it because I feel I waste the big part of my day. Sorry don't mean to complain. This is all too new to me it started the end of Aug and a lot to wrap my mind around. I sleep during the day and then sometimes it is hard to sleep at night. Well better get to bed. So I can get up in the morning and take my son to practice driving for his permit. At first he was so gun ho and now is scares the pants off him. lol Can you see me shaking my head. Thinking of driving to grandma's if the weather is fit. lol You have a good night it has been great chatting with you.

Maja,

My docs say it should be a piece of cake (well as cakey as as can be expected given you have to be in a hospital in the first place). Please let us know how it went as soon as you are up to it. As soon as the recovery is complete I think you will be pleasantly surprised and happy you did it!

Maja,

Sounds about right from what the experts tell me. Glad to hear there were no complications. Perhaps you can trade notes with ashleylovie who also just had a pacemaker installed as well as cherokeeblond who has had a pacemaker for decades.

Hey ladies, perhaps you would like to chime in here. Experience is the best teacher.

Hmmm…the only discomfort seem to have is some slight burning and stinging it lasts for a few min and goes away. People say a shock is like a kick in the chest. It doesn't feel like that just some burning and stinging. I had it before bed last night and then it woke me in the night briefly. Then I went right back to sleep. Maybe I just need to get use to it. Otherwise just tired. They say it is a precautionary measure to shock me back. My pressures and arthymias are fine. Idk. Waiting to see if this will pass. Doesn't seem major just annoying. If it persists or gets worse will call doc.

Maja,

I would call regardless. Not because I think there is a problem, just for mental reassurance so your mind is comfortable with the new sensations. Yeah, the tiredness should pass after a few days, maybe even a couple of weeks. Everyone is different.
