Plavix Anyone
I have been taking Plavix since my bypass surgery in 96. Since that time I have had four stents put in, all within the last 4 years. Ever since the bypass I keep heartburn and had been taking 1 prilosec a day which kept it under control. Now my doctor tells me I can't take the prilosec anymore because it counter-acts the Plavix. Has anyone else heard of this or had these problems?

Since being on plavix and seeing a new heart doctor, thought I would give an update on what he said about the Prilosec. He doesn't want me taking the Prilosec but has put me on prescription strengh prevacid. He said the prevacid would not interfer with the plavix and he went on to say that the prilosec only interfers with less than 1% of the patients who take plavix. Any way, I don't want to be in that percentage so I stick with the prevacid.
Good answer HeartHawk. Just had 2 stents placed on 9/30/11 and recently found the same article warning about use of Prilosec and the like. Being on Plavix now, I was glad to know of the dangers.
I was on Plavix for a year after my Heart Attack in March 04. I must have been one of the lucky ones because Ive been on Prilosec etc. for years thanks to 2 ulcers and I didn't have any adverse reactions at all thank heavens!
Pappy,
Yes, acid reducing Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) like Prilosec (omeprazole) are known to interact with Plavix (clopidogrel). Here is the FDA alert on this interaction.
