Sometimes it might cause a droopiness in one side of the head. It causes lots of lightheadness and dizzyness

Hello all..I'm new to this discussion & full of ?'s & numerous hrs of cryin to sleep or not sleeping!. My husband 38yrs old had a stroke walking into the grocery store April 1 as I was waiting for him to come home or call askin what else I wanted, I get a call he his being med flighted to a neurological ICU. He had a major stroke. It was caused by the veins in his neck, somehow it was injured, turned wrong or even painting a ceiling. They ended up finding 3 clots in his brain, he hemorrhaged as the doctors had said, yes it was a triple heart attack for myself!! He had to have part of his skull opened then another to relieve more swelling. They placed a drainage of his cerebral fluid bc his brain was not doing it as ours regulates itself. They tried taking him of the vent that lasted 10 min. So I agreed to the trach surgery & the feed tube through the stomach. (Let me say it was suffered on his right side so the left side as no movement) I seen him out of the ICU yesterday he moves his mouth like he wants to talk, the trach is stopping that.. I see he can swallow bc he was a smoker and believe me he has a strong cough & it's coming out! I will caps lock the ?'s bc this is such a long discussion, WILL HE BE ABLE TO TALK? DOES HE KNOW I HAVE BEEN THERE EVERYDAY BY HIS SIDE? DOES HE EVEN REMEMBER HE IS MARRIED? I call him baby, yes he opens his eyes wide when I call him. The left eye idk the terms looks like a lazy eye now so I'm assuming there is some eye problems, I ask the doctors they always say "hard to tell" CAN'T U LOOK INTO HIS PUPILS AND NOTICE A LITTLE SOMETHING AT LEAST? I notice one stays dilated WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? He does things that I don't know if he is being him, he is a typical brat, I told him wave hi to someone & he gave the middle finger. We all laughed as he did to it was cute to see him chuckle!! Later the nurse asked to do the thumb/finger test, YES YOUR RIGHT HE GAVE THE MIDDLE FINGER! Thought I would turn my tears into a lil different thought for a smile sorry.. I walked in and he was just playin with a ball in his right hand of course. IS HE GONNA BE SO TO SAY LIKE A TODDLER? HE CHUCKLES AT STUFF LIKE A TODDLER DOES…SOUNDS, THROWING THE BALL, HE JUST SHRUGS HIS SHOULDERS AS IF SAYING IDK, POINTS AS IF HE WANTS TO TELL ME THINGS SO IT'S AS IF HE IS BEING MY HUSBAND THE FULL OF PERSONALITY THEN SOMETIMES ITS MIXED …ANY HELP?? NOW I KNOW.. WISH I DIDNT HAVE TO RESEARCH IT,HOWEVER DRS INFAMOUS IDK QUOTE DRIVES ME INSANE! HE'S BEEN THERE IN BED ONLY RECENTLY 2 days SAT HIM IN THE CHAIR WHAT'S THE CHANCES/ODDS OF REGAINING ANY SORT OF ANYTHING ON HIS LEFT SIDE??? I CAN HANDLE ANY HONEST ANSWERS PLEASE JUST LET ME KNOW ANY ANSWERS IR EXPERIENCE YOU HAVE SEEN/WENT THRU. IS HE EVER GONNA BE ABLE TO HUG ME AGAIN?? DOES HE KNOW I LOVE HIM & NEVER LEFT HIS SIDE? DOES HE KNOW WE ARE EVEN MARRIED & FOUR KIDS BETWEEN BOTH OF US?? IM JUST SO FULL OF QUESTIONS NOW THAT THE RECOVERY BEGAN YEAH THE WORST IS BEHIND, HOWEVER IT MAY HAVE JUST BEGAN FOR MYSELF AND THE KIDS. Any ANSWERS suggestions/motivating replies Plz help! OH Yes I ALSO DONT KNOW ALTHO THE DRS SAY NO WHICH BC THEY SEEN ME NEARLY DROP TO THE FLOOR WHEN THEY MENTION THE PAINTING AND THE PLAY FIGHTING JEEZ IDK I ASKED HIM TO REACH A PIECE OF THE CEILING WHILE PAINTING HE HAD TO STRETCH HIMSELF TO DO SO I CANT HELP THINKING I COULD OF CAUSED THIS??? HIM & MY SON PLAY FIGHT MMA TAP OUT WHICH IM TOTALLY AGAINST HOWEVER HE NEVER TAPS OUT AND MY LIL GUY THINKS HIS STEP DAD IS THE TOUGHEST GUY IN THE WORLD I KNOW THATS A FACTOR AS WELL ALL THE GUILT SORROW AS LEFT ME ANSWERING THESE ?'s ALONE!! O let me say otherwise the freakin smoking (Plz don't ever smoke if ur a non smoker) i smoke & watchin him cough & struggle getting it up Im weaning myself off after 20yr smoker.! It's a drug habit really! Just a hopefully helpful advice!! SO SORRY FOR THE LONG THREAD IF U READ THE WHOLE THING U ARE A ANGEL! Thank you I hope with this I inspired a few or even a person you are not alone and Plz don't do something's that u never would think playing with your child could instantly tear your world apart!!! My best wishes*****

Thanks for taking the time to tell your story. We all really appreciate it when someone has the time and courage to tell their story in such detail as it helps so many others.

Stroke is a funny thing. I have an aunt who had a stroke that we thought would kill her and she has come back from barely able to speak to the point that you could never tell she had a stroke. You really never know. It is common to be aphasic (can't talk) especially in the beginning as the brain attempts to "rewire" itself. So is various degrees of paralysis. It all depends on the location and severity of the stroke. 38 is young. That youth means there is time.

From my persepctive that fact that he gave people "the finger" probably means that he is frustrated too, very aware of people and his surroundings, and maybe just has a little sense of humor going.

You are so right about smoking. Snuff those suckers!

Please keep us up to date on your progress, setbacks, and feelings. You have friends here and many of us can relate to your situation.

Thanks for the encouraging advice and comments. That is what they have all said he is young fit and active. He actually is frustrated and very emotional I believe he is now becoming more alert of his surroundings. As he tears and just grabs my ring and looks at my other hand as I always have reassured it was on his "non movement" hand by showin him. He actually as I learned not to baby him, I made him move his right hand above his head and wipe his own eye. It hurts to be so demanding although I read this & actually made sense to me. He sure enough did! With the trach in he yelled as a whisper "NO" bc I kept asking if his head hurt I guess I asked to many times. He just can't shake that fever. He is gettin the shunt I believe it's called Friday. Any information in form I can understand would be great?? Thank you…

Thanks he is doing better considering the way he went in. No movement on the left which i came to terms with and so ready to take on!! He is still in ICU bc he has really yucky phylum and with the trach it's hard to get out and phenomia, some other bowel virus from all the antibiotics. Sounds like a lot however I will take it as progress. Thanks for thinkin of us! Hope all is well with you & family…

I am also a new member. How can you distinguish the symptoms of a mini-stroke from that of the usual symptoms of sickle cell disease? Since it is a disease of circulation, how can you tell?

HeartHawk 2011-11-13 21:52:17 -0600 Report

The short answer is you cannot tell. Sickle Cell Anemia (SCA) does indeed "thicken" the blood and cause circulatory problems and a transient ischemic attack (mini-stroke) or "TIA" can occur as a result of SCA. However, SCA is a "body-wide" circulatory problem that can show up as many symptoms in any part of the body.

A TIA is a problem with circulation to the brain and can be caused by many other conditions. The key is to understand the symptoms of a TIA so that you can alert your doctor to look for possible causes. Since SCA is an inherited condition people usually know they have it at an early age long before symptoms like TIAs show up.

The bottom-line is you can never immediately know what causes a TIA but what is important is treating the symptom as quickly and as aggressively as possible to avoid brain damage or death, just like a heart attack.
