A new warning was issued by British doctors about the potential dangers of using low sodium products as part of a low sodium (low salt). More here

It seems that many low-sodium products replace the sodium with potassium leading to high potassium complications. Anyone here on a salt restricted diet? Anyone here had a problem in this area?

I have not had any problems with the low sodium diet and of course the best advice is to get rid of the salt, I don't use any substitue. I prefer Mrs. Dash

harley,

So true. The only the lucky few who are not salt sensitive can afford to sparingly use salt but the fact is that standard American food products contain WAY too much salt and sodium!

Low sodium salt substatution NO WAY!!!!!!!!!! Cut down or avoid the salt all together. No additional problems, just avoid the salt shacker all together.

I found I don't miss the salt when I add herbs spices and like lemon juice or fruit rind to the foods. All it takes is a little trial and error to get kinda good at it

I know I was receiving potassium shots when I was in the hospital last year. They had me on a no salt diet. They also gave me insulin shots which blew my mind.
Then they explained that when I'm ill my whole system goes wacky. So now I have to go see my new family doctor to find out if I got to take shots or the pill for my diabetes. This week though I get my results back from my new cardiologist. I had pneumonia and almost died. doing great now.

I was in hospital in July, had a heart cath and was suffering from cardiac failure. I had already taken 80 mg of lassix and they gave men another 100 mg in an IV. Potassium dropped to a level that could cause A fib. I had 3 bags of potassium in my IV. Sure don"t want anymore that way. I thought I was on Fire.

tinman,

Yeah, it seems like sometimes they are pulling you in opposite directions then trying to make up for it.

Judy,

Thanks for chiiming in. Your story is instructiive. It is amazing that when you upset the balance of things in your body how many other things can go wrong - go wacky!

Please let us know how your tests come out and what your cardiologist has to say. This kind of shared experience is invaluable.

Well I got my results yesterday and my cardiologist took me off three medications. Now I take Plavix 75mg, Fenofibrate 54mg, and Simvastatin 40mg and Carvedilol 3.125 mg tabs. He told me that my heart is doing great and said the blood flow through my rca anterior is fine. So now I don't need to see him for a year. Feeling great and looking for a job now.

Judy,

Heh, that "PA" after my name always trips people up. It stands for "Patient Advocate" which is my function on HeartConnect.

Actually, Im from Wisconsin but, yeah, it has been hot here too! Lots of days in the 90's but it is great weather for a convertible. I only put the top down when it's above 72 and usually only above 82!
