Did your doctor prescribe low-dose aspirin for you? Just because it is a common, over-the-counter pill does not mean it is not an important part of your prevention program. A new study revealed that stopping a low-dose therapy significantly increases the risk of heart attack. Read more here.

I was told by my Doctor 16 years ago to take an aspirin 325mg and up until 3 months ago I had been and then the doctor had changed it to the low dose 81 mg.

azmumm:

I was doing the same but I started having stomach problems and studies show the low dose to be just as effective. Now, I "split the difference and take 162.5mg (I basically break a 325 in half).

Ive been taking 325mgs for more years than I can count LOL! I believe it is the reason my heart attack didn't cause any real damage to the heart muscle AND why the heart attack wasn't any worse.

I too take 325mg of aspirin, have been for the past 7-8 years prescribed by my doc as well. I was on low dose but was in and out of hospital every other year with several stents and no stomach problems

I take 81 mg of aspirin morning and night. However, I also take 800 mg of ibuprofen 3 times a day for arthritis in my back. I take Prilosec 40 mg twice a day to protect my stomach. The aspirin started after I had my first knee replacement to prevent blood clots.

RBBB,

Thanks for the input. Yeah, ibuprofen can be hard on the tummy! How is it working on your back? Be certain to ask your doc about heart risks of long-term NSAIDS like ibuprofen.

I have been taking a 325mg asprinin for the last 14 years. Don't have any stomache problems. I also have been takeing plavix for 14yrs. One DR took me off of plavix and I had to have 2 stents within a year. What I don't understand is why do some take low dose (80mg) while others take 325mg asprinin?

Pappy,

The latest studies show that low-dose (about 80 mg) is as effective as higher doses with less bleeding risk but the recommendations still suggest following your doctor's orders. Lab studies show that as little as 30mg is sufficient to completely inhibit thromboxane the chemical that starts the clotting process.

The real answer is that everyone is different so without extensive testing it is difficult to know what is best for you. That is why, despite all the studies, they leave it up to yor doctor to use "Kentucky windage" in prescribing the dose. The best SWAG seems to be between 81mg and up to 325mg, but again, your doc should be relied on to consider all the various factors that could affect your personal dose.

Here are some links to articles I posted on the subject. The Mayo Clinic article is the most practical in terms of useful advice. The other provides some nitty-gritty scientific info on the subject.

Morning - That's what they had me start taking after my heart cath 3 years ago. I've been on it ever since. My stomach's still in good shape.

Lenny,

Good news. I used to have a "cast iron" stomach before I started staking all these meds - including aspirin!

Te Ja,

How long have you been taking it and have you had any stomach or other problems? Was this dose at your doc's advice or just because it is a convenient dose?
