Feb 12 of 2010 I had went to move my oxygen tank around when I suddenly had a sharp stabbing pain in my stomach. I went back and sit down, at that time the pain was going up my chest and my back into my jaw. My wife had me call dad, he came over and took me to the hospital. When we got to the hospital I remember going in to ER, I passed out and did not even know that I had been taken by ambulance to another hospital. I did wake up briefly when they put me on the helicopter for the ride to the next state were I was put into ICU I did not wake up for over two weeks when I came out of the coma and off life support. After spending two months in two hospitals and three months in a nursing home. I have now been home just little over a year. I just saw my cardiologist they other day, He said I am looking and doing good for someone that almost did not survive a year ago.

Saw my dr today and asked him about what happened. He said was a dissecting aneurysm that started above the heart in the aorta traveled down through the stomuck. He said that it was 5 centimeters in diameter.the tear was a seperation of the inside lining from the outside It did not rupture. He did say by all rights that I should not have made it. I am requesting my medical records on the aneurysm.

What was the diagnosis they gave you? The title says "aneurysm" and if so where. The symptoms sound more like a heart attack.

An aortic aneurysm they called it a dissecting aneurysm (splitting or dissection of an arterial wall by blood entering through an intimal tear or by interstitial hemorrhage; more common in the aorta.) the Dr said the tear was over a foot long. When I go to the ER they have it down as AAA. They said it was to risky to do surgery. they put me in a coma on life support for about two weeks they brought my blood pressure down. I was told I may need surgery later on.

Something doesn't sound quite right. A footlong tear in the aorta itself you would have bled out long before you were transported from home to hospital to a second hospital. AAA is what killed Conway Twitty and John Ritter and one of my brothers in law. The ONLY way to save someone w/that large an AAA is IMMEDIATE surgery to repair the aorta and even given immediate surgery the survival rate is drastically low, considerably less than 50%. Less than 50% even stay alive long enough to make it to the hosptial much less live thru surgery if I remember the statistics correctly.

The aorta is the largest artery in the body and provides the flow from heart to the entire body.

My husband had aortic dissection. He made it to the hospital, was rushed to a bigger hospital, had a 6 hour open heart surgery to repair the aorta. He was asleep for 4 days and spent 10 days in the hospital. it's been 8 months ago. He is doing well. The doctors said most people don't make it to the hospital & if they do they don't make it through surgery.
