I have been on this medication for little over a month and so far no side effects.
I had a stent placed about the same time. I am taking the highest doseage (10MG) and my cardiologist told me to take a 325 mg dose of enteric aspirin with it. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone else who is taking this medication and how it's working for you.

Effient is the brand name for Prasugrel a new anti-platelet drug that was designed to compete with Plavix (clopidogrel) to reduce reccurence of heart attack especially after a stent or angioplastry. Put simply, it makes the blood less "sticky" as does aspirin (but via a different mechanism) and less likely to form clots at the site of a stent or angioplasty (a common occurence).

Effient was shown to reduce recurrence by 19% over Plavix but a new study also suggests it may increase cancer risk by 43%. I have followed the development of Prasugrel for some time now and it was originally hailed as much more effective and with fewer side effects. Plavix is not well metabolized by some persons leading to increased side effects so Effient was seen as an improvement. Note that 10mg Effient along with 325mg aspirin is the maximum recommended combination dose and side effects may increase at this dose.

Effient is a powerful drug that provides benefits but also has substantial risks as does taking any medicine. Make certain to discuss all the medical evidence with your doctor to see if Effient is right for you. Ask specifically why Effient was prescribed over other therapies and drugs. Just because it is "new" is not a good enough explanation. If you feel your doctor is not giving you the whole story look for a second opinion.

The key here is that we are all different. Even a supposedly "better drug" may not be the best drug for you.

Looking out for your health,

I appreciate the additional information. The better informed we are, the better choices we can make. I do have a side effect, the common one of easy bruising. No doubt this comes with the fact of taking the maximum recommended combination. This is all still rather new to me so I'm treating each new day as a learning experience.

I had my third HA on 1/22/11, after a ten year reprieve…I'm allergic to Plavix and have been put on Effient plus 325mgs of Aspirin as well…so far, just some itching to the hands…but I DO have Beta Thalasemmia Minor, (sticky platelet disease) so it appears if I want this ticker to last me (at 51!) I am going to need to stay on Effient!! Good luck to you !!!

One thing I forgot. I have been taking Fish Oil since the first of the year. No itching at all. Don't know if that's connected though.

..and to you! I recently had a follow-up with my cardiologist and all is well. I know it's just a step but it feels good. May it work miracles for you.
